Express Yourself… Through Blogging!

You can express your thoughts and feelings through bloggingPeople express themselves in many ways. For a growing number of people the need for a means to air a public expression of thoughts, feelings, style or creative expression is filled by blogging. Blogging gives you a great way to express yourself and have this expressions seen by many people along the way. Of course, there is social media too, but having your own blog in your own space gives you far more control over what you say.

It doesn’t matter if you want to express yourself on the subject of your business or hobbies, the fact is, there is a much bigger opportunity to do that now than ever before. What’s more, if you’re inclined to, you can find ways to monetize that blog with something relevant to your reader and earn a little money on the side.

Express Yourself By Being YOU!

Expressing your thoughts in written words is not as easy as it may seem to many people. You may take a while to accurately record your thoughts to the written word. The important thing is to actually DO it. With practice it gets a lot easier. Write in plain language and try not to be too complicated. Your thoughts and feelings do not require the organization or structure that may be seen as required by the written word.

As you write you will notice the need for improving your grammar and your vocabulary, but you can do this with some effort with practice, practice and more practice. In other words, get good by doing and learning as you keep doing.

Here are a couple of tips to help you along the way:

  • Grammar! Always write to your audience! If you have a business blog, it was common to write to optimize a page for search engines. Sometimes this meant the content wasn’t so readable. The search engines have got clever with the algorithms they now use. For this reason, it’s more important than ever to write to your audience, no matter what your subject or your goal is. They are the ones who need to understand you. Perfection may be deemed necessary if writing for an audience of scholars and grammarians, but regardless of your audience, the better your grammar and the better you will be understood. It will also be easier for you to transfer those thoughts to paper. You can find hundreds of English grammar guides available online and very reasonable ones in bookstores. Good grammar is a tool you will never regret learning to use, so take advantage of learning it.
  • Vocabulary! Finding the right words to express yourself is a lot easier when you have a lot of words to choose from. Don’t be tempted to learn some obscure words to impress your readership. This could confuse them and turn them off your content. Keep it simple so anyone can understand it. If you need to, find a good dictionary or thesaurus to which you can refer.
  • write often to express yourself and your thoughtsWrite Often! The more often you write, the better you get. You will also learn what your readership likes and start to write in a style that keeps them coming back. Regular and meaningful content posted to your blog every day will be beneficial for you if you’re running a business. It may not always be possible to write every day, but do try!

Two wonderful things about blogging are its flexibility and availability. Your blog will always be there (As long as you keep it maintained and the hosting paid for of course) when you need it and you’ll find the more you write, the easier it gets. Don’t try to be perfect. When you express yourself, it doesn’t always come from perfection, it comes from being YOU and being real! Bear in mind that even a professional writer who writes for hours every day is seldom completely satisfied with their own work. If you find yourself getting stressed out or under pressure, take a short break and then try again. Blogging to express yourself is fun and doesn’t have to be stressful.

  • Great advice, Barrie. Indeed, writing more often does make it easier and spelling and grammar are so very important for the reader – they might not be to you but they are to your readers. I find it very difficult to read poorly structured prose as much as writing with poor spelling and grammar so you are very right in saying write for your readers.

    Enjoy the journey!

    • I find it hard to read posts that have poor grammar too. I find myself saying to myself “that should be like this or that. Thanks for your comment 😀

  • It’s one of the reasons why I love blogging. I love expressing myself!
